Royal Bafokeng Platinum boosts profits as production increases 8th March 2011

Royal Bafokeng Platinum (RBPlat) has raised its profits thanks increasing production and higher metal prices.

The Johannesburg-based mining company said the amount of tonnes milled rose 12 per cent to 2.41 Mt, as output of PGM ounces in concentrate increased seven per cent to 288,100 oz.

At the same time, head grade dropped by five per cent to 4.31g/t, the company said in its results for the year ending December 31st 2010.

Although RBPlats believes 2011 will be a year of consolidation, it will be focusing growth efforts on the Styldrift expansion project.

Mining Weekly reports that this is progressing well, with the bulk earthworks and bulk site infrastructure constructions completed.

The sinking of the main and service shafts is underway, with permanent power supply planned for 2014.

Bloomberg reports that this project, which aims to boost production to 611,000 oz of PGM a year by the end of 2017, will be largely funded by an agreement between the company and Impala Platinum Holdings.

The world's second largest producer of platinum will have access to part of RBPlats' reserves in return for a 17.5 per cent royalty.

"It will give Impala the Merensky ounces they need" and deliver "some nice cash flow" to RBPlats, its chief financial officer Martin Prinsloo is reported as saying.

He explained to the news provider that Impala will gain access to the ore via its own Number 20 shaft at the northern end of RBPlats' Boschkoppie reserves, adding that further deals of this sort could be done in the future.

Announcing the results for last year, Business Today reports that RBPlat stated: "The increase was due to higher revenues while the majority of costs remain fixed. This ensured that the major portion of the revenue benefit filtered straight down to the profit line.

"The increase in revenue resulted from metal prices and higher production volumes, partially reduced by a stronger rand/dollar exchange rate."

Platinum-based cancer treatment moves to clinical trial phase 1st March 2011

Chinese authorities have given the go-ahead for clinical trials of a new platinum-based cancer treatment.

Poniard Pharmaceuticals was granted Clinical Trial Application (CTA) approval by the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) to progress with two Phase III clinical studies of picoplatin for the treatment of small cell lung cancer and ovarian cancer.

The biopharmaceutical company said picoplatin has already shown promise in treating both these types of cancer.

It is designed to overcome platinum resistance associated with chemotherapy in solid tumours, the company explained.

Ronald A Martell, chief executive officer of Poniard Pharmaceuticals, described the SFDA decision as a "milestone", which combined with two recent draw downs totalling $3.4 million (£2.1 million), will provide the company with additional leverage as it works towards completing its strategic review.

"We believe that CTA approval from the SFDA enhances picoplatin's value proposition to potential partners in two important disease settings in which picoplatin has demonstrated strong clinical potential," he added.

Platinum jewellery the choice of Hollywood A-listers at the Oscars 1st March 2011

Platinum jewellery was the choice of some of Hollywood's hottest leading ladies as the stars turned out for the 83rd Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

The Oscars saw a host actresses choosing platinum jewellery from leading designers such as Neil Lane, Lorraine Schwartz and established houses like Cartier and Tiffany & Co.

Natalie Portman, who won Best Actress for her portrayal of a ballet dancer in Black Swan, opted for a platinum and diamond ring by Tiffany & Co, which was also the jewellery maker of choice for the ceremony's co-host Anne Hathaway.

She wore a platinum and 94.29 carat diamond necklace, a platinum and 5.13 carat diamond ring and a pair of platinum and 10.15 carat diamond earrings from the New York house.

Amy Adams, who starred in The Fighter, wore $1.35 million (£830,000) worth of jewellery from Cartier, including a platinum watch bracelet with 30.75 carats of emerald and 21.5 carats of diamonds, a platinum necklace with a 33.24 carat emerald and 15.38 carats of diamonds, and a pair of platinum and two carat diamond stud earrings.

Harry Winston was the jewellery maker of choice for both Michelle Williams and Sandra Bullock, who picked up an Oscar last year for the film The Blind Side.

Meanwhile, a host of actresses chose the "King of Bling" Neil Lane for their red carpet platinum jewellery.

Mila Kunis, Halle Berry, Jennifer Hudson and Reese Witherspoon all opted for platinum jewellery from the designer.

In an interview with examiner.com, Lane explained that the glamour of the jewellery is less about the rings and earrings and more about the women wearing them.

"It's really more about confidence than it is about style - how well the actress carries off the look is how glamorous the jewellery is going to come off looking - I've been lucky in that all of the women who have worn my jewellery have had that confidence – they make the jewellery look good, not the other way around," he told the website.

Other platinum jewellery makers whose designs were in evidence at the Oscars included Lorraine Schwartz, who was the choice of Annette Bening.

Chopard provided a platinum and ten carat pink sapphire ring with two carat diamonds for Penelope Cruz and platinum and fancy yellow 16 carat diamond earrings for Jennifer Lawrence.

Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman and Hailee Steinfeld both chose platinum and diamond rings by Fred Leighton.

Platinum Australia upbeat on Smokey Hills operation 4th March 2011

Platinum Australia is confident of increasing production at its Smokey Hills operation on the eastern edge of South Africa's Bushveld Complex.

This is thanks to mining contractor JIC Mining Services taking on more staff after dismissing 85 per cent of the Smokey Hills workforce following wildcat strikes last year.

Platinum Australia expects to achieve its planned production level of 60,000 tonnes per month by June as JIC Mining takes on some local workers and transfers 300 staff from other operations.

A further 100 to 150 workers are to be taken on in the coming months to help the Smokey Hills complex get back to full operating capacity.

Despite the depleted workforce, Platinum Australia says the Smokey Hills processing plant has continued to operate normally, treating primarily stockpiled chrome tailings under an agreement with Ingonyama Platinum.

This has allowed the Smokey Hills Mine to achieve a positive earnings result of approximately £250,000 for the first two months of the quarter, with further improvement expected in March.

Platinum today: Zimplats ‘committed to $500m mine expansion’

Zimplats 'committed to $500m mine expansion' 3rd March 2011

zimplats
The Zimbabwe unit of Impala Platinum (Zimplats) is committed to $500 million (£307 million) mine expansion, although concerns remain over government plans to transfer majority ownership in foreign firms to local people, it is reported.

Muchadeyi Masunda, the company's deputy chairman, said that despite the worries, there is little option but to press on with the expansion plans, Reuters reports.

"As a board we are going to have to review the current situation in the light of what's going on at the moment," he told the new provider, indicating that the project will be re-examined in May.

Mr Masundi went on to explain that the key players in the Zimbabwean mining industry, such as Rio Tinto and Anglo Platinum, need to discuss the proposed mining law amendments.

"The most important thing is constructive dialogue," he added.
Speaking to Reuters at the sidelines of the NG Mining conference, Mr Masundi went on to say that the company is "very bullish about the future".

The news agency reports that Zimplats foresees its Ngezi phase 2 expansion to increase annual platinum output from 180,000 oz to 270,000 oz.

Mining Weekly reported recently that the company will import power from the Cahora Bassa dam in Mozambique to develop its interests in Zimbabwe, which has the second-largest platinum reserves after South Africa.

Platinum; Rare, Pure, Eternal. Platinum is pure.

It's brilliant white and does not fade or tarnish. Platinum is 30 times more rare then gold. Platinum is more durable than other jewelry metals due to its density. It doesn't wear away or change its shape, perfect for a lifetime of wear.

Some advice on your care for your Platinum:  Because You deserve the finer things in life

Clean and polish your Platinum jewelry periodically. This will enhance the life and appearance of your jewelry.  Making you look Tremendous!  People will want to be you.

Clean Platinum in the same way you clean your other fine jewelry. Use a pre-packaged jewelry cleaner, the preferred way, or by soaking it in of soap and warm water. Then gently rub it with a soft cloth.

Eventually over time Platinum develops a natural patina that many people prefer over the "just polished" look. When this happens, you can take your piece to your qualified jewelry to have it re-polished to a high gloss look.  This keeps the majestic look of Premium Pure Platinum.

Carefully store your Platinum jewelry separately, in a jewelry box or chamois bag so they do not get scratched by other items of jewelry.  People of affluince take care of themselves and what they own.  I am sure your are one of those people.

Don't handle bleach or harsh chemicals when wearing platinum jewelry. Although they won't hurt the Platinum, chemicals may discolor diamonds or gemstones.

For adjustments, resizing, polishing and cleaning, find a QUALIFIED jeweler. Ensure he/she is trained in working with Platinum as it requires additional skills.

Have your Platinum jewelry cleaned professionally once in a while. Platinum jewelry that is set with gemstones should be cleaned professionally every six months.

All precious metals can scratch and Platinum is no exception however, a scratch on Platinum is simply a displacement of the metal and none of the volume is lost.  Gold is much softer than Platinum and is easier to scratch and damage.

Keep your Platinum pieces in a safe place and be sure to have them sufficiently insured. If you are unsure about the value, take is to your local QUALIFIED REPUTIABLE jeweler for a valuation.

Anyone can own Silver of Gold. Just walk down the street and you will see the average person with silver of gold on.   You deserve Platinum!
