Platinum jewellery the choice of Hollywood A-listers at the Oscars 1st March 2011

Platinum jewellery was the choice of some of Hollywood's hottest leading ladies as the stars turned out for the 83rd Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

The Oscars saw a host actresses choosing platinum jewellery from leading designers such as Neil Lane, Lorraine Schwartz and established houses like Cartier and Tiffany & Co.

Natalie Portman, who won Best Actress for her portrayal of a ballet dancer in Black Swan, opted for a platinum and diamond ring by Tiffany & Co, which was also the jewellery maker of choice for the ceremony's co-host Anne Hathaway.

She wore a platinum and 94.29 carat diamond necklace, a platinum and 5.13 carat diamond ring and a pair of platinum and 10.15 carat diamond earrings from the New York house.

Amy Adams, who starred in The Fighter, wore $1.35 million (£830,000) worth of jewellery from Cartier, including a platinum watch bracelet with 30.75 carats of emerald and 21.5 carats of diamonds, a platinum necklace with a 33.24 carat emerald and 15.38 carats of diamonds, and a pair of platinum and two carat diamond stud earrings.

Harry Winston was the jewellery maker of choice for both Michelle Williams and Sandra Bullock, who picked up an Oscar last year for the film The Blind Side.

Meanwhile, a host of actresses chose the "King of Bling" Neil Lane for their red carpet platinum jewellery.

Mila Kunis, Halle Berry, Jennifer Hudson and Reese Witherspoon all opted for platinum jewellery from the designer.

In an interview with examiner.com, Lane explained that the glamour of the jewellery is less about the rings and earrings and more about the women wearing them.

"It's really more about confidence than it is about style - how well the actress carries off the look is how glamorous the jewellery is going to come off looking - I've been lucky in that all of the women who have worn my jewellery have had that confidence – they make the jewellery look good, not the other way around," he told the website.

Other platinum jewellery makers whose designs were in evidence at the Oscars included Lorraine Schwartz, who was the choice of Annette Bening.

Chopard provided a platinum and ten carat pink sapphire ring with two carat diamonds for Penelope Cruz and platinum and fancy yellow 16 carat diamond earrings for Jennifer Lawrence.

Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman and Hailee Steinfeld both chose platinum and diamond rings by Fred Leighton.
